Gardening Tip

August

August is the time to start getting ready for the Fall!

Fall vegetables and annuals, fall fertilization and weed control for your lawn and time to start planning for any improvements/ remodels in the landscape!

Plant:

Fall Vegetables:  Yes it's time!  Plant cucumbers, squash, corn and beans the first week, add broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and brussel sprouts mid month and end the month by palnting leafy and root crops. (Come in to pick up your copy of Bruce Millers Vegetable planting dates!)

Annuals: Celosia, marigolds, zinnias.... plant them in full sun in well prepared soil to add color or revive the color in your beds.

Shrubs: fill those empty spots in your landscape. Shrubs can provide color in your beds year round thru their foliage. Container grown shrubs and trees can be planted at any time of year. You simply have to give hand water them every 2-3 days to keep them looking their best.

Perennials: as these become available, start planting chrysanthemums, Fall Asters, Mexican Bush Sage, Mexican mint Marigolds and bulbs such as lillies and crocus!

Grass: Plant warm season grasses such as Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia, and Buffalograss. Water 2x/day for the first 2-3 weeks. Remember grass requires at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day to thrive! .

Herbs: Who can resist the smell of rosemary in the air as you brush against it? Plant herbs every where: in containers, in your vegetable or flower bed...anywhere they will have ample room to grow and get sufficient sunlight.

Prune:

Remove dead limbs/branches from trees.  Use pruning sealer to seal cuts only on Oaks to prevent the spread of Oak Wilt. .

Reshape shrubs with a light pruning to remove erractic growth. Avoid shearing whenever possible.

Remove dead growth (flower heads, foliage, stems) from perennials and lanky, spindly stems form annuals such as impatiens, lanatana, copper plants and coleus.

Mow at recommended heights so your grass will not be stressed by the summer heat! For healthy lawns, St. Augustine should be mowed at 2-2.5" and Bermuda t 1.5".

Lawns:

Fertilize Bermuda with a quality all Nitrogen fertilizer formulated for N. Texas clay soils. You can use this same fertilizer on your trees, shrubs and flowering plants.

Wait till September to fertilize St. Augustine.

Fertilize:

You can use a high Nitrogen fertilizer everywhere: Lawn, tress, shrubs, container plants, annuals, perennials; just be sure it doesn't contain a weed killer.

Add water soluble food to all container plants to keep them blooming.

Add iron/sulphur to any chlorotic plants (yellow leaves with dark green veins especially on new growth)
